The Smidge & Houdini Wine Dinner September 6 2011

We were so pleased to be able to showcase the talents of the team behind Smidge & Houdini – Trish & Matt Wenk at the Wine Dinner held at Little Blue on St Kilda pier on September 6 last .

Whilst Matt is quite rightly ‘ famous ‘ for his full time position as the wine maker at the iconic Two Hands he can claim also great satisfaction I am quite sure from his Family venture Smidge Wines.

The bill of fare for the night was :

Houdini Adelaide Hills Sauvignon Blanc 2010

Spanish Quail Caesar salad 2011

Quail, Kaitaifi pastry, cos hearts, Spanish white anchovies, and Serrano jamon

The ‘ Cellar Pod ‘ Adelaide Hills Viognier 2007

Bugs in peaches and cream

Moreton bay bugs with vanilla, white peach, wood sorrel flowers and wombok

‘ The Adamo ‘  Barossa Shiraz 2007

The old man’s soup with duck a la mandarin

Jacques Reymonds pekin duck consommé, rice noodle, mandarin braised pekin duck coriander and mint

The ‘ S  ‘ Barossa Shiraz 2006

Tongue in cheek

Star anise and liquorice braised beef cheek with smoked beetroot puree , mount zero quinoa , ox tongue , mushroom pithievier and broccolini florets

A very special bottling of a yet to be released 15 year old Muscat

Cheese from over here and over there

Heidi Gruyere and Fourme D’Ambert

Served with fruit loaf, muscatels and Lavosh.

Tea and coffee and petit fours

The wines were all paired very well by Little Blue with , in my opinion , a stand out in the pekin duck consommé – it is doubtful that I have had such a memorable meal yet rivaled ( maybe ) by that extreme duck that Pearl used to provide : there would be an interesting pairing for comparison !

The 2007 Adamo is now rewarding all of us for the cellaring that we recommended and we still have stock on hand so do come for some !

The pleasure of having both Matt & Trish at the dinner was only surpassed by the quality of the food that Eddie provided once more from the kitchen of Little Blue and we really do hope that many of the attendees return to the venue to sample his undoubted talent – will he put the bugs on the menu and will he advise us when he does is an issue…….

Do come in to discuss the next dinner and do come in to buy the Smidge / Houdini Wines and congratulations to all who bought ( at a great discount ) on the night and there is another reason to become a Wine Club Member !!

Thank you so much Matt & Trish for coming to the dinner and for providing such wonderful wines.

Cheers,

Tyson
